Knowing your constitutional rights during a police stop can make a significant difference in your case. This article outlines what you should and should not do when pulled over.
Remain Calm and Polite Always be respectful and keep your hands visible. This helps de-escalate the situation and protects your safety.
Your Right to Remain Silent You have the right to remain silent and do not have to answer questions beyond providing your license, registration, and insurance. Politely say: 'I would like to speak with my attorney before answering any questions.'
Consent to Search Police need a warrant to search your vehicle unless you give consent. Never consent to a search. Say clearly: 'I do not consent to a search.'
Right to an Attorney You have the right to an attorney at any point. If arrested, clearly state: 'I want to speak with a lawyer.'
Document Everything If possible, note the officer's badge number, name, and patrol car number. Get contact information from witnesses.
If you are arrested, contact our office immediately. Do not discuss your case with anyone except your attorney.
